Hello there! I'm resending this post today in case you missed it because it was so popular and the summer session of my kitchen design program starts in 2 weeks! Here are some of the common mistakes DIY kitchen designers shared in group posts. I'll just go ahead and admit it... I love to scour kitchen design facebook groups! I'm sure some of you are with me! I find it fascinating to see what other people are up to and see the design challenges they encounter as DIY'ers when building or remodeling.
#1 PANTRY DESIGN
"I have a deep pantry and I hate it! It's a reach in closet style and the shelves are so deep I can't to get to anything without pulling everything out."
#2 POTS AND PANS STORAGE
"I wish I had ordered drawers for my pots and pans." Someone else commented that she only has pot and pan drawers but they aren't deep enough.
#3 COFFEE BAR
"I should have included a coffee bar. We are always running into each other in the mornings." Someone shared their amazing coffee bar photos with all of their small appliances neatly tucked away behind doors. She added that in her next design she would have the doors slide back into the sides of the cabinet vs sticking out.
#4 SECOND REFRIGERATOR
"I wish we had added a second refrigerator. A counter depth one looks great but is not nearly big enough for a family of five."
#5 SINK LOCATION
"I hate having my sink in the island. I am the cook and my husband is the dishwasher so all the towels are always on the island and it stays wet."
#6 CABINET DESIGN
"My factory cabinets would't go high enough. I wish we had done semi-custom so that we could have run all them way to the ceiling to maximize storage plus I love how it looks. Too late now."
#7 EXTERIOR EXHAUST
"I wish we would have made our contractor run an outside vent for better exhaust but I didn't force the issue."
#8 NO POT FILLER
"I really wish I had put in a pot filler now." One person commented they want one too and hear a lot of people regret not putting them in."
#9 KITCHEN ISLAND DESIGN
"I wish we had made our island bigger. We only went out as far as we could without installing brackets... we should have it larger for more comfortable seating. I don't like hitting my knees."
#10 OUTLET LOCATION
"I wish I would have known to have the electrician install outlets underneath my cabinets instead of in my new backplash."
#11 CABINET DESIGN
"I wish we had put hydraulic hinges on my top layer of wall cabinets that open and close with the push of a button. I have to stand on a step stool to reach my upper cabinets. I'm trying to figure out how to retrofit them."
#12 CABINET COLOR
"Why didn't I hold the cabinet sample up to the pantry door to make sure it matched ?"
#13 BAKING STORAGE
"We had to modify a cabinet because there was no where to fit my baking sheets".
#14 TRASH DRAWER
"The trash drawer is sooo hard to pull out."
#15 COUNTERTOPS
"We picked a slab that about 3" too short for the island and had to reselect at the last minute. I was not happy about it." Someone else commented, "We just did a huge island and I wish I had kept it to one slab so the seaming or matching isn't an issue. The seam down the middle is always going to be there. I should have just gone with a 6"narrower island and been done with it."
#16 KITCHEN LAYOUT
"I wish I had removed a wall to make my kitchen bigger. I was in too much of a hurry to get it done before my daughters baby shower and now I regret it".
#17 CABINET HARDWARE
"I wish I would have chosen better handles for the cabinets."
#18 APPLIANCE LAYOUT
"I know this sounds ridiculous... but if I open my refrigerator and microwave at the same time they hit each other. I had a friend who couldn't open her dishwasher and stove at the same time. You would think this would be planned out but it's not".
#19 CABINET QUALITY
"I wish I would have chosen better quality cabinets. I was so excited about the white shaker style, I didn't even notice it wasn't real wood."
#20 PREP SINK
"I wish the island had a sink of it's own. Everyone coming to get water while I'm meal prepping meat or washing veggies is not cool. We need space over there, somewhere, anywhere but at the kitchen sink for tea, coffee or just to get a glass of water."
